Billboards featuring Jennifer Lawrence being strangled spark outrage

By WITW Staff on June 3, 2016

Actor Rose McGowan has become the latest to weigh in on new posters for X-Men: Apocalypse, that show Jennifer Lawrence’s character in a chokehold. The image — featuring Oscar Isaac, as arch-villain Apocalypse, choking Mystique, played by Lawrence — is being used for posters and billboards promoting the film.

“F*** this s***,” wrote McGowan in a Facebook post. ” … I felt angry, uncomfortable and shocked to see a frightened woman being choked by a man. Given this freeway usually sports anti-domestic violence billboards, it was jarringly out of place.”

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, McGowan said that the image, sometimes accompanied with the slogan, “Only the strong will survive,” was disturbing, and that it had badly upset a friend’s 9-year-old daughter. “There is no context in the ad,” said McGowan, “just a woman getting strangled. The fact that no one flagged this is offensive, and, frankly, stupid.”

The poster, which has been seen on billboards in Los Angeles and New York, has sparked outrage in users across Twitter. The extent to which the image is being used for promotion of the new film is unknown.
