Woman “humiliated” after being shamed for “inappropriate” tank-top she wore to gym

Jenna Vecchio (Facebook).

It’s becoming ever harder for people to know how to dress when leaving the house to go to work, school, or even the prom, if recent news headlines are any indication. That difficulty now extends to selecting the proper attire to wear at the gym, says a Canadian woman who claims she was body shamed for her choice of workout shirt. Jenna Vecchio was exercising with her husband last week at a Movati Athletic Club in Ottawa when she was approached, she said, by a gym supervisor who told her that the tank-top Vecchio had on was making other gym members uncomfortable. Using an alias, Vecchio shared front and back images of the black tank-top she wore during the workout in a post on Facebook.

Vecchio said the tank-top — which looks like garden variety workout attire — wasn’t any more revealing than the clothes other women in the gym were wearing at the time, and she even posted screenshots from the Movati website depicting women wearing similar shirts working out. Vecchio suspected that she was being “discriminated against” because of her larger chest size. She said the whole body shaming ordeal had left her feeling “humiliated.”

The gym responded by saying it had investigated the incident and stood by the supervisor’s decision to approach Vecchio. “The Movati staff never indicated Ms. Vecchio’s style of shirt was not appropriate — it was the lack of coverage that was the issue as she exercised adjacent to other members,” the gym said in the statement. It also criticized Vecchio and her husband for going public with the grievance. Still, the critical mass of people who weighed in on the original Facebook post are in stark disagreement with the gym. Many users concurred with Vecchio that the gym was discriminating against her. Others had a more blunt  — yet effectively succinct — assessment: “This is bullshit.”
