In March, a plane left John F. Kennedy airport in New York for California’s San Francisco. Aboard were 100 women who had been carefully vetted by Marie Claire magazine for a unique bi-coastal women’s conference called PowerTrip, according to Quartz.
The 36-hour trip brought together women entrepreneurs and CEOs to engage and network in a “pop-up conference” atmosphere. “We wanted to turn the conference format inside out and create plenty of opportunities for interaction,” Marie Claire editor-in-chief Anne Fulenwider told Quartz. “The most valuable and fun experiences don’t happen in the conference room but, instead, by the coffee or on the buffet line. It’s out of a casual gathering that relationships are formed.”
Jill Furman, one of Hamilton’s four producers, said the trip made her feel like “a member of a club.” Others said the confined space and unusual atmosphere created a sense of freedom to establish connections naturally. When they touched down on the west coast, participants heard from “brief and valuable” speakers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyra Banks. The next day, a varied panel of speakers (including Black Lives Matter co-founder Opal Tometi and actress Tracee Ellis Ross) spoke on marketplace disruption and feminism.
