A 60-year-old Christian woman, convicted of breaking Sharia law by selling alcohol, was caned in Indonesia on Tuesday — the first time a non-Muslim was punished for breaking Sharia law. She was hit nearly 30 times with a rattan cane in front of a crowd of hundreds.
The brutal public shaming took place in Banda Aceh, Indonesia’s most conservative province and the only one allowed to implement Islamic law, with corporal punishment for adulterers, homosexuals, people who drink alcohol or even those who speak to unmarried members of the opposite sex. Because of new bylaws that went into effect last year, members of other religions can now also be punished under these rules, although it had not happened before Tuesday’s caning.
