Chance Ward of Occidental College received quite a bit of attention for helping a peer in need this week. On March 22 the student posted a Facebook status that asked others to “keep your menstruating friends in mind” after he encountered a woman at the gym who was in need of a tampon and expressed surprised when he, a man, offered a sanitary product. “Y’all know literally like half this world goes through this?” he said. “I keep some in my fanny pack when I go to the gym, and some in my backpack all the time,” Ward wrote, advising women to “never feel embarrassed for asking for one” and “never feel embarrassed for being human.” Both women and men praised his actions and thoughts the comments section.
His post has been liked over 44,000 times and shared by over 9,000 Facebook accounts. CNN notes that Ward is not alone in his solidarity: last year, a 15-year-old boy posted “#realmensupportwomen” to Instagram and asked others to bring pads and tampons to school to help end stigma against menstruation.
