Muslim-American comedy duo mock stereotypes with new NYC subway ads

A series of comedic ads mocking anti-Muslim stereotypes have gone up in subways around New York City. The campaign was created by comedians Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah to promote their upcoming documentary, The Muslims Are Coming! “The Ugly Truth About Muslims: Muslims have great frittata recipes,” one ad reads. “Muslims hate terrorism!” says another. “They also hate: People who tell you they went to an Ivy League school within 10 seconds of meeting them.” The goal of the campaign and the upcoming documentary, according Farsad, is to break down prejudice and promote tolerance. “The point of the movie is just to show Muslims in a positive light, to build a bridge with mainstream Americans,” she told Reuters. “Muslim-Americans can be super-hilarious and that’s kind of just what we want to show people.”

Though the ads are now up and running, the campaign faced several hurdles.  In June 2015, the production company behind The Muslims Are Coming! filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) after it withdrew approval for the campaign. Somewhat ironically, the MTA invoked a policy that bans advertisements pertaining to “disputed political issues,” which was originally implemented to halt Islamophobic ads produced by the right-wing American Freedom Defense Initiative. In October 2015, a federal judge overturned the ban on the ads by Farsad and Obeidallah.
