Two of the Earth’s brightest stars are set to blast into space in a new film – Hidden Figures, slated for a January 2017 release, will star Empire’s Taraji P. Henson and everyone’s favorite suit-wearing musician, Janelle Monae. Based on a book by the same name, the Ted Melfi-directed film will portray the vital roles African American women played in the space race and will also star Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.
The lives of space pioneers Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson will be explored. According to the book synopsis, these women were “segregated from their white counterparts by Jim Crow laws, these ‘colored computers,’ as they were known, used slide rules, adding machines, and pencil and paper to support America’s fledgling aeronautics industry, and helped write the equations that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.”
