“I’m not a doctor”

Co-author of bill tried in Supreme Court today doesn’t know how abortion works

Today marks the start of a landmark women’s rights moment in American history: the United States Supreme Court is set to hear a case that determines the legality of Texas bill HB2, a law that requires abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic where it will be performed, and in a facility that meets ambulatory surgical standards. These standards have proven almost impossible to meet in Texas, causing the closure of half of the state’s 40 abortion clinics and has led to a rise in DIY abortions. And, as proven this week on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, the Republican representative Dan Flynn, author of HB2, has no idea how the procedure even works.

In the segment, Flynn said the bill came to fruition “to be sure that we provided health care, safe health care for women … anytime you start cutting on people’s body you need to have it in a procedure where it can be healthy.” Bee points out that abortions do not require cuts or incisions to the body, to which the 73-year-old replies, “I’m not a doctor, I don’t know, but I listened to many doctors tell me about the procedures that happen when you do an invasive surgery.” Bee, comedian extraordinaire, used the moment to illustrate the absurdity of Flynn’s not knowing the specifics of the procedure with a Game of Thrones sequence. Humor in the darkness, thank goodness.
