Actress Emma Watson has been busy lately. Last month she launched a feminist book club, and this month she revealed in a conversation with feminist writer bell hooks that she plans to take a year off from acting to study up on feminism. Incidentally, book club duties will also be a big part of her time away from show business. “I’m taking a year away from acting to focus on two things, really,” Watson told hooks. “My own personal development is one … My own personal task is to read a book a week, and also to read a book a month as part of my book club.” Watson said she even considered going back to school. “I almost thought about going and doing a year of gender studies, then I realized that I was learning so much by being on the ground and just speaking with people and doing my reading. That I was learning so much on my own. I actually wanted to keep on the path that I’m on,” she said. hooks applauded Watson for her commitment to learn more about feminism, noting that celebrities often jump on a cause without having real deeper interest in what they’re publicly supporting. “You’re really sincerely struggling with what is needed to create a world without patriarchal domination,” hooks said.
