Demi Lovato unleashed a spontaneous Twitter-essay on female empowerment Sunday as she tweeted her support of fellow singer Kesha, whose court battle with Sony over her record contract and alleged sexual assault by her producer Dr. Luke drew many supportive tweets from female celebrities this weekend. What began as a single tweet in support of Kesha and criticizing those who called her a liar soon blossomed into Lovato calling on other women to take women’s empowerment more seriously, even when it’s not convenient.

She released a series of tweets on what female empowerment meant to her, including lending voice to the voiceless, taking action even when it’s inconvenient, and leading women to make changes in society. Her tweetstorm received thousands of favorites and retweets, reverberating around the internet Sunday as news of Kesha’s court case spread.
