Here’s some inspiration for the writers of “Orange Is the New Black”: A Vietnamese prisoner was able to avoid the death penalty by secretly impregnating herself. Nguyen Thi Hue, a 42-year-old convicted drug trafficker who had been sentenced to death in 2014, reportedly paid a 27-year-old fellow inmate $2,300 for his semen, with which she successfully impregnated herself using a syringe. Under Vietnamese law, pregnant women or women with children younger than 3 years of age, cannot be executed — only sentenced to life in prison. So, once the woman gives birth to the baby, which is due in April, she will see her sentence commuted to life in prison. According to the Vietnamese Thanh Nien newspaper, four prison guards have been suspended for negligence because of this incident.
