Susan Sarandon doesn’t vote with her vagina, she says on Twitter

By WITW Staff on February 18, 2016

Susan Sarandon is once again speaking out to explain why she’s supporting Bernie Sanders and not Hillary Clinton in the 2016 race. The Academy-Award winning actress appeared on the campaign trail with Sanders last month in Iowa, and since publicly supporting the senator’s bid for president, has faced something of a gender backlash. In a series of messages posted to Twitter on Wednesday, Sarandon clarified the language some have criticized her for having used. “I never called anyone a ‘vagina voter.’ What I actually said in response to being shamed for supporting a man over a woman,” Sarandon said is, “I don’t vote with my vagina. It’s so insulting to women to think that you would follow a candidate JUST because she’s a woman. HRC doesn’t rep my interests, @BernieSanders does. Simple as that.”

In recent weeks, a gender firestorm over what constitutes a feminist and which type of candidate a feminist should support has erupted. Some of the players who have been caught in the crossfire — besides Clinton, Sanders and Sarandon — include big names like Gloria Steinem, Madeleine Albright and Hip-Hop artist Killer Mike. So far, Steinem and Albright have issued measured apologies and Sarandon and Killer Mike have held their ground.
