“Fashion with faith”

Barbie gets a hijabi makeover

By WITW Staff on February 16, 2016

Move over the new petite, tall and curvy Barbies — make way for Hijarbie. The brainchild of 24-year-old Nigerian graduate student, Haneefah Adam, “Hijarbie” is the subject of an Instagram account that features the iconic doll dressed modestly and with a headscarf. “I set up the account initially to create an avenue to make modest outfits for dolls, because I haven’t really seen one before,” Adam told Al Jazeera. “The hijab is actually more about modesty than fashion but who says you can’t incorporate both together? Fashion with faith.”

The official Barbie “Dolls of the World” line does not feature any dolls in a hijab. At the time of writing, Adam’s account had attracted more than 36,000 followers since its December start.
