German police reported that the amount of complaints of sexual insults or aggressions had quadrupled during the Cologne carnival celebrations, despite increased security after the mass sexual assaults in the city on NYE. Between last Thursday and this Wednesday, the end of the carnival, 66 complaints were registered — up from just 18 last year, although the police cautioned that this might be due to “a change in the attitude of victims and witnesses.”
Women’s groups had urged women who were inappropriately touched to report it to the police, as local authorities also urged women to report any crimes to the police. Thanks to the heightened security, however, the number of crimes that were non-sexual in nature were down compared to last year’s.
