“Bright Universe”

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan announce Chinese name for daughter

By WITW Staff on February 10, 2016

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced the Chinese name of their two-month-old daughter Saturday in a video showing off their Mandarin language skills in honor of the Chinese New Year. Their daughter, named Max in English, will also have the Chinese name Chen Mingyu, which represents “our hope for a brighter tomorrow for the world,” the couple said in the video. The word Chen is derived from Chan’s family name, and mingyu is composed of two words, “ming,” meaning bright, and “yu,” which means universe, according to CNN. The name Max likely comes from Zuckerberg’s grandfathers, according to the report.

“From our little family to yours, we wish you health and prosperity in the New Monkey Year!” Chan says in the video. Zuckerberg then looks down at Max and says, “Happy New Year! You think my Chinese is bad?”
