Italian woman on trial for not doing enough housework

An Italian woman is facing up to six years in jail because her husband has accused her of neglecting to cook and clean. The husband made a complaint to the paramilitary Carabinieri police, alleging that his wife refused to put meals on the table, left their house a mess, and sometimes kicked him out of the bedroom. The woman was charged under article 572 in the Italian penal code, which “punishes whoever mistreats a person in their family or a person entrusted to them for reasons of education, care or custody.” Her trial is slated to start in the town of Latina on October 12, and if found guilty, she faces between two and six years of imprisonment. Let’s just take a moment to remind ourselves that we are living in the year 2016.
