Young women using Tinder to rally support for Bernie Sanders

Some young women are really feeling the Bern … which is why (with no formal relationship to the Sanders campaign) they have taken to dating app Tinder to campaign for the popular presidential candidate. Robyn Gedrich, a 23-year old from New Jersey, told Buzzfeed she had been swiping right on every Tinder profile, only to then surprise every match with a message saying “Do you feel the bern? Please text WORK to 82623 for me. Thanks!” She explained that she came up with the idea as she became bored and felt she had nothing in common with the men she was meeting on the app. “These guys are disgusting. They’re just looking for sex and that’s it. So if they’re going to swipe right, they might as well do some good and donate to the man, the myth, the legend, Bernie.”

Several other women have taken up the challenge too, as both a Facebook group and a Tumblr have sprouted up, dedicated to the efforts of Tinder-campaigning for Sanders. As per usual on the app, responses have varied from polite and supportive to downright offensive and misogynistic, making it hard to tell whether the digital campaign efforts have been successful. Gedrich herself was recently blocked from Tinder because she had been reported too many times, but she told Buzzfeed that most responses she received were people spouting vulgarity at her, asking her whether she was a bot or — worse — telling her they would vote for Donald Trump.
