Rosie Perez’s heartfelt story of the school principal she will never forget

“I felt like somebody cared about me.”

When there are traumas at home “by the time you walk into school, you’re a nervous wreck,” actress and advocate Rosie Perez said at Tina Brown Live Media’s annual American Justice Summit. A long-time artistic board member of the Urban Arts Partnership, an organization that brings arts education programs to underserved schools in New York City and Los Angeles, Perez spoke about the importance of understanding how the obstacles children can experience at home can impact them in school, citing her own experience growing up.

“Mr. Sanchez. I’ll never forget him,” Perez told the crowd of her school principal. Watch the video to hear how he changed her life.
