These women-run podcasts come highly recommended

The podcast industry is largely dominated by male voices — in 2013, for example, men hosted 70 percent of the most popular ones on podcast app Stitcher — so Alicia Marie Tan of Mashable has put together a list of 10 podcasts by women “you probably haven’t heard,” suited to a range of listeners.

Included on Tan’s list are shows that discuss important social issues, such as Call Your Girlfriend, covering matters relevant to the “Internet-addicted pop culture-loving feminist,” and Black Girls Talking, in which four women discuss “pop culture, representation of people of color and more.” There’s also Women of the Hour, hosted by Lena Dunham, creator of Girls, in which she converses with women on a variety of topics. Guys we F****d takes a different approach to combatting slut-shaming by having hosts Corinne Fisher and Krystyna Hutchinson interview men they’ve slept with each week, and shows like Invisibilia tackle more abstract issues, like the unseen forces of thought, belief, and emotion.

Those new to podcasts are advised to look into Serial, an investigative series hosted by journalist Sarah Koenig. It might have been included on the list too, if it wasn’t already the current most-downloaded Podcast on iTunes.
