10 male CEOs promise to make data public on hiring and promoting women employees

The chief executives of 10 major global companies – all of them men – have joined together with the United Nations Women’s movement HeForShe to become more transparent about the numbers of women in executive positions, they announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Tupperware, Twitter, Barclays Koc Holding, PwC, and Unilever were some of the companies whose top brass promised to make public the number of female employees, the gender ratio of new hires, the number of women in senior management, and the number of women on their boards.

The announcement came amid criticism that more than 80 percent of the attendees at the Forum are men, and that women continue to struggle to make it to the top positions of companies that have already said they are committed to gender diversity.

“Most companies do a good job at the professional entry level. The real issue is the talent pipeline,” said Pat Milligan, of the human resources company Mercer.  “When they get to higher levels, they leave at higher rates. What happens? Typically, they encounter work-life issues. Typically, they have a male supervisor who can’t counsel them.”
