A Christian college’s decision to fire a popular professor over her comments that Christians and Muslims worship the same God sparked protests at the school Monday. Wheaton College political science professor Larycia Hawkins posted a photo of herself wearing a hijab and a statement on her Facebook page in December saying she planned wear the hijab throughout the Christian Advent season in solidarity with Muslim women facing Islamaphobia because, “We worship the same God,” she wrote. Hawkins said she was a devout Protestant, according to Al Jazeera America.
The college said Hawkins refused to discuss the theological issues present in the post, though Hawkins disagrees and says she met with administrators to discuss her beliefs, according to the report. Wheaton, which requires professors to sign a faith agreement in support of its Protestant beliefs, then began the process of firing her. Students on Monday gathered at the school’s chapel steps holding signs and chanting “Reinstate Doc Hawk,” in support of the professor.
