A Thai cosmetics company has pulled a video advertising a skin-whitening product, named Snowz, amid accusations on social media of racism. The ad shows Thai actress Cris Horwang, extolling the advantage fairer skin had given her professionally. “In my world there is tough competition. If I don’t take care of myself, everything I have built, the whiteness I have invested in, could be gone,” Cris Horwang says in the video, reigniting a debate in Thailand about stereotypes associated with skin color.
The product’s makers, Seoul Secret, issued a “heartfelt apology” after withdrawing the video. The problematic ad was still viewable on YouTube, however, after being captured and re-posted by others.
