A 20-year-old ISIS fighter has executed his own mother in public, after accusing her of apostasy, according to reports by an expat-Syrian rights group. Ali Saqr al-Qasem is said to have shot his mother Lena, 45, in the head with an assault rifle in front of a large crowd in the ISIS capital of Raqqa in Syria. According to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, he had reported his own mother to his superiors, who was then accused of “inciting her son to leave the Islamic State and escaping together to the outside of Raqqa” and sentenced to death, with al-Qasem himself ordered to carry out the execution. Hundreds of people reportedly turned up to witness the execution. ISIS, known for carrying out public executions and sharing them on social media, has regularly used the charge of apostasy (leaving one’s religion) to murder anyone who opposed or spoke out against them.
