While spouses seem to have become an almost indispensable “accessory” for any presidential campaign — with wives appearing next to their husbands at campaign events, speaking at rallies, or giving interviews — one person has been noticeably absent from the current presidential race: Melania Trump. Donald Trump’s wife of ten years has so far largely stayed out of the spotlight, with a sit-down interview with Barbara Walters in November as a rare exception. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she explained her absence from the campaign trail by saying that she is her own person: “I’m choosing not to go political in public because that is my husband’s job. I’m very political in private life, and between me and my husband I know everything that is going on. I follow from A to Z,” she told the magazine. “But I chose not to be on the campaign. I made that choice. I have my own mind. I am my own person, and I think my husband likes that about me.”

Despite his controversial views on immigration and Muslims, the 45-year old architecture graduate and former model and designer from Slovenia says she stands behind her husband’s campaign, “He is not politically correct, and he tells the truth,” she said. “Everything is not roses and flowers and perfect, because it is not. He wants America to be great again, and he can do that.”
