Roxane Gay, author of the acclaimed collection Bad Feminist, is slated to release a memoir about her difficulty and  complicated relationship to her body. Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body will explore Gay’s emotional struggles with food and weight, while delving into the terrible act of violence that came to define her self-image. But this is not a story of weight loss and fitness. “I started this book fat, and I’m finishing it fat,” Gay told Entertainment Weekly. “This isn’t a book about successful weight loss. It’s about trying to change my relationship with food.”

Using her personal experiences as a launching point, Gay will confront cultural anxieties surrounding food and fatness. “People will look, but they won’t say anything, or they’ll say something behind my back,” Gay said, of her weight. “So I decided to stop that game and say, ‘You know what? I’m gonna talk about this. I’m gonna take control of the narrative — and of my body.’”
