Female “Star Wars” lead left off new Monopoly board, angering fans

Lucas Films

The decision to leave female Star Wars-lead Rey off a new official Monopoly board themed after The Force Awakens, has confused and angered many fans of the franchise. The makeover of the popular Hasbro game features characters like Finn, Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren and Darth Vader, while Rey — played by Daisy Ridley, and for many the hero of the movie, was not included. Several fans have taken to social media with the hashtag #WheresRey, complaining about this “oversight,” with some of them noting that Darth Vader is part of the game, while he wasn’t even a character in the movie.

In a statement in response to the controversy, Hasbro explained the game was released in September, so they deliberately left out Rey “to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance.” Fans weren’t having this, noting that if Rey appeared in trailers for the movie, she could appear in the game too. Hasbro also pointed out that Rey appears in several other games, and claimed they were thrilled with the character’s popularity, adding they would  “continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines.”
