Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has released a new collection of hijabs and abayas — the headscarves and loose cloaks worn by some Muslim women. The line, which was revealed for the first time on Style.com Arabia, takes these staples of traditional Muslim dress and embellishes them with bold prints and dramatic flourishes of lace. Most pieces come in neutral colors, but some are splashed playfully with daisies and lemons, much like the label’s spring-summer 2016 runway collection.
Last March, shortly after a heavily motherhood-themed showing of their fall collection, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were publicly lambasted for what many deemed to be prejudicial comments about gay adoption and In vitro fertilization. The new collection of Muslim womenswear thus comes as something of a saving grace for the designers: their open embrace of minority fashion is already being hailed as a significant moment in the couture industry.
