In Indonesia this week, a pair of university students were publicly caned after committing “khalwat,” or affectionate contact by an unmarried couple, according to the Jakarta Post. 20-year-old Nur Elita and Wahyudi Saputra, 23, each received five lashings while a crowd of hundreds cheered in the front yard of the Baiturrahim Mosque in Banda Aceh. The young woman was rushed to the hospital after a masked man punished her.
“Take these punishments as a lesson. What has been done by these convicts should not be taken as an example. And I hope their canings in Meuraxa district today will be the last ever,” Banda Aceh Deputy Mayor Zainal Arifin said.
Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that practices sharia law.
