U.S. military members tell Muslim girl scared of Trump “#IWillProtectYou”

By WITW Staff on December 23, 2015

Members of the U.S. military are speaking up with the hashtag “#IWillProtectYou” in response to Sofia, an 8-year-old American Muslim girl who was frightened when she heard that a man named Donald Trump wanted to ban Muslims from the country. Sofia’s mother Melissa Chance Yassini described how her daughter responded when she heard about Trump’s plan on the news: “She began collecting all her favorite things in a bag in case the army came to remove us from our homes. She checked the locks on the door 3-4 times,” she wrote in a Facebook post that has been shared thousands of times since. “This is terrorism. No child in America deserves to feel that way.” Kerri Peek, a mom and Army veteran from Colorado was so touched by the post that she decided to respond: “Salamalakum Melissa!” she wrote on Facebook, next to a photo of herself in uniform. “Please show this picture of me to your daughter. Tell her I am a mama too and as a soldier I will protect her from the bad guys.” She then asked her friends in the services to do the same — posting a picture of themselves in uniform with the hashtag #?IWillProtectYou “to let these children know that we will not hurt them. That they are safe here in America.” Many responded, sharing pictures with their own words of support and encouragement for Sofia and other Muslims. The hashtag trended on Facebook. Melissa says she was overwhelmed by the support, saying she read each and every post out loud to her daughter — who now “understands that we’re all part of a fabric which is America.”
