“Cards for Brianna”

Mom with breast cancer leaves behind funny, poignant letter for friends and family

By WITW Staff on December 22, 2015

Heather McManamy faced her breast cancer bravely — and with humor. The mother of one created a book of cards for all of the special occasions to come in her daughter’s life that will be published in a book called Cards for Brianna. When she passed away last week, on December 15, her wit and verve were apparent in the goodbye note she had instructed her husband to post to Facebook the next day.

“So… I have some good news and some bad news,” she wrote. “The bad news is, apparently, I’m dead. Good news, if you’re reading this, is that you are most definitely not (unless they have wifi in the afterlife).”

McManamy encouraged her friends to have a “kickass party” and promised to haunt them. She also asked that her friends and family never say to Brianna that her mother was “lost” to cancer, but that the way she lived each day with cancer was a victory.

“Don’t ever forget: every day matters,” she wrote.
