And we have a winner. MaryAnn Uribe, 48, from San Antonio, Texas, has been awarded a pornography website’s inaugural annual scholarship. Back in September, Pornhub, one of the most highly-trafficked adult websites on the Internet, grabbed headlines when it announced it was running a student competition for a $25,000 scholarship. At the time, many feminists derided the scholarship as a stunt that was aimed at exploiting young women. This is not the first time Uribe has appeared in news headlines. Four years ago, she was at the center of sensational news when police revealed she was the target of an assassination plot by her boss, a lawyer who wanted to silence her after she reported alleged illegal activities to authorities. He’s expected to go on trial sometime next year, and has denied the charges. Uribe is also disabled, saying she speaks with a stutter and suffers from agoraphobia as a result of the traumatic experience. Uribe said she dropped out of high school and had been meaning for years to resume her education — but life got in the way. She now has two kids and recently finished a two-year degree at a local community college.

Corey Price, the vice president of Pornhub, explained why Uribe’s application stood out from the more than 1,000 others the company received. “We were looking for someone who spread happiness and effected positive change,” Price told The Washington Post. “She’s been through a lot. When negative things happened, she really stood up for herself.” Uribe will reportedly continue her studies at Troy University in Alabama.
