Yes, strangely enough, beauty pageants are still a thing. But they only manage to make global headlines when something goes horribly wrong — which is what happened last night, when host Steve Harvey accidentally named the wrong woman as winner of Miss Universe. “OK, folks, um, I have to apologise,” the comedian and TV-host said, returning to the stage where Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, had just been crowned and was blowing kisses to the crowd. “The first runner-up is Colombia,” he went on, “Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines.”

The camera cut to an astonished Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who was crowned a few awkward moments later, while Harvey told the audience he took responsibility for the mistake and explained he had read the names in the wrong order. Many on social media panned Harvey for the mistake, calling it “the fail of the decade”. After the pageant, Wurtzbach told reporters she wished Arevalo well, saying: “I’m very sorry, I did not take the crown from her and I wish her well in whatever she wants to pursue after this pageant.”
