This American Life producer Sarah Koenig quietly dropped the second season of her hit podcast Serial at 6a.m. on Thursday morning. The first season of the podcast delved into the murder of Hae Min Lee, a high school student from Baltimore. Lee’s ex-boyfriend was found guilty of her murder, and Koenig’s efforts to unpack his (possibly) questionable conviction saw Serial break records as the fastest podcast to reach 5 million downloads on iTunes. This time around, Serial will explore the case of Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier who walked off his Afghanistan base and was captured by the Taliban in 2009. It is not a true crime story, but there is plenty of mystery for Koenig to explore: just why Bergdahl decided to abandon his platoon and wander off into the desert remains unclear. So if you’re not on board the Serial train, brace yourself: this is all your friends will be talking about for the next few weeks.
