FLOTUS on the track! Michelle Obama has teamed up with SNL star Jay Pharoah for a rap song encouraging kids to pursue higher education, as part of her “Reach Higher” campaign. By spitting rhymes in the White House like “If you wanna fly jets, you should go to college. Reach high and cash checks? Fill your head with knowledge,” Pharaoh and Obama are trying to convince students that a college degree will open up all kinds of possibilities for them — from being an astronaut to building bridges. The campaign is part of a larger White House effort to tackle the slipping US college graduation rates. “I want to honor and empower young people who are working hard in school and pursuing their dreams,” FLOTUS said in a statement. ”And I want to do it in a fresh and fun way.” The song refers Michelle Obama’s own upbringing in a working-class family in South Side Chicago, where she studied hard to eventually graduate with degrees from Harvard and Princeton. “We had to do overtime every night to make it tomorrow and everyone can really make their dream true,” she raps. “Hey, kid listening in Michigan, that could be you.”
