Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has become known for interacting with fans and taking shots at trolls on social media, so when Twitter users started comparing Donald Trump to Voldemort, she decided to jump in, tweeting Tuesday morning: “How horrible. Voldemort was nowhere near as bad.”
Comparisons with the villain from the Harry Potter series erupted after Trump called on Monday for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” This reminded many people of the “fictional eugenicist and genocidal maniac” Voldemort, who called on his followers to murder “Mudbloods” (people who don’t have “pure” wizard blood) and, throughout Rowling’s celebrated series, tried to kill young wizard Harry Potter in order to fulfill a prophecy. While many immediately jumped in to agree with Rowling, others were quick to point out that “Trump hasn’t killed anyone.”
The Telegraph capitalized on the debate with a poll, asking which is worse: Donald Trump, Voldemort or “using a children’s book for political commentary”. And yes — even in this poll, Trump has a strong lead.
