The “pussy bow” is an enduring style of blouse adorned with a delicate bow at the neck, but feminist artist Christen Clifford has attached a more literal interpretation to the term. Clifford, whose work is often rooted in the most basic functions of the female body, is now selling silk scarves modelled after images of her vagina. She was inspired by one of her own performance pieces, during which she live-streamed the inside of her vagina using a wireless, internal-camera vibrator. “I thought the colors would be a deeper red,” Clifford said. “The pinks and purples and even blues that resulted were a surprise. The light on the camera highlighted my vaginal mucus to that lavender blue.” In addition to celebrating the beauty of her vaginal mucus, Clifford’s “Pussy Bow” is intended to serve as a call to arms at a time when women’s reproductive rights are increasingly under attack. The artist, however, is not always so cerebral about the project. “For me, it’s just my pussy,” Clifford wrote on her Tumblr page. “And I’d love for you to wear it around your neck.”
