Height Matters: Women dating taller men are happier, study finds

(Todd Heisler/The New York Times)

While scientific research has already pretty much established that women generally value height in a potential partner, so far no one had bothered to figure out whether having a taller man would also significantly increase a woman’s happiness. Researcher Kitae Sohn of Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea, decided to tackle that very question by surveying some 7,850 Indonesian women. He found that those who had married tall partners did indeed report higher levels of overall happiness, even finding that “a greater height difference in a couple was positively related to the wife’s happiness” — meaning that the taller the husband, the happier the wife! The happiness is not everlasting, however, as the study concludes that the increased happiness that comes with a taller partner would weaken over time. According to the results, that happiness tended to completely dissipate after 18 years of marriage. For what it’s worth, Kitae sees an evolutionary logic in women’s preference for taller men. “Women evolved to prefer tall men because they were perceived to be stronger, and naturally they are happy when they have what they like,” he writes. “But as for other desired objects, pleasure from having them dissipates. What was surprising is that the complete dissipation took 18 years.”
