Oprah Winfrey, 61, is perhaps one of the most famous people on the planet, but in 2004, she cemented one line into all of our brains when she surprised a full crowd of people with brand new Pontiac G6 cars. In the 19th season of The Oprah Winfrey Show – the media mogul’s “Wildest Dreams” season, to be specific – she filled the audience with 276 people who were in desperate need of a vehicle. Winfrey handed out white boxes with red ribbons and announced that in one box, one audience member would find the key to a $28,500 G6. As the crowd discovered that they all had keys, the screams grew louder. “YOU GET A CAR! YOU GET A CAR! YOU GET A CAR!”, Winfrey yelled while pointing. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight 11 years later, she clarified why she was inclined to yell that line over and over again.
“I was saying that because people were screaming so loudly they didn’t know what was going on,” Winfrey explained. Prior to that moment, I had said, ‘Open up your boxes. One person has a key.’ So when I looked at the faces of the audience, they go, ‘But I have a key … but she has a key,’ so that’s why I said, ‘You get a car! You get a car!’ to try to clarify, because they all looked so confused. Everybody gets a car!”
