At the tender age of 11, Jaden Newman scored 57 points last week for Downey Christian High School in the school’s first basketball game of the season. Newman, a 6th grader, has played and excelled on her school’s varsity squad since third grade — last’s week’s game saw the young star notch her 1000th varsity point. Last year, at age 10, the point guard averaged 30.5 points and 9.2 assists. This year’s opener saw her effortlessly dribbling around older and taller players, setting up teammates, and scoring at will: she sank shots from all over the court and finished the game having made a dozen 3 pointers. And with three years to go until she becomes a freshman in high school, Newman’s best years on the varsity squad are still to come.
