Adele’s “25” breaks 15-year-old debut week album sales record

By WITW Staff on November 24, 2015

Music industry experts predicted Adele could shatter the all-time record for most albums sold in the debut week of release, and on Tuesday she did it. As of Tuesday, that record now stands at 2,433,000 million albums sold — *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached had held the record since 2000 with 2,416,000.  Adele’s 25 appears to be on pace to sell about 2.9 million copies, according to experts, as she still has three full days left in her debut week.

“Hello” the brooding and melancholy first single from the new album, the singer’s first in three years, took the Internet by storm. On YouTube, the song’s video has racked up a mind-boggling 475 million views and counting in just over a month. And “Hello” has inspired a number of arresting cover versions, including this one by a high school girl in South Korea that’s amassed more than 13 million views on YouTube. The song has struck such a deep emotional chord with listeners that even Miss Piggy and Kermit have gotten in on the act with their own version. We can’t show the video to you here, but click through to to watch — it’s just a wee bit different than the original.
