Campus assault

Despite lawsuit threat by NFL player accused of rape, CNN still airs controversial film

CNN ignored the threat of a lawsuit and decided to air a controversial documentary about campus rape on Sunday night that includes a segment about the Heisman Trophy-winning and now NFL quarterback Jameis Winston. The documentary, The Hunting Ground, focuses primarily on two former University of North Carolina students, but includes an interview with Erica Kinsman, a former Florida State University student who accused the school’s star quarterback, Winston, of sexually assaulting her. After a lengthy and controversial investigation, no charges were filed against Winston and he went on to be drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Winston’s attorneys sent a legal notice to CNN about the network’s plan to air the documentary, which included Kinsman’s allegations against the football player, calling them “false and defamatory.” But both the filmmakers and CNN defended the decision, with the network saying it was “proud to provide a platform for a film that has undeniably played a significant role in advancing the national conversation about sexual assault on college campuses.”
