According to a new report in The Guardian, the war on abortion is not only being waged in Texas, but all over the U.S. Abortion clinics are being shut down and they’re closing in liberal states that have historically been viewed as abortion-friendly as well as conservative states, like Texas. “The trend is disturbing,” Nikki Madsen, executive director of the Abortion Care Network, a group representing independent abortion providers around the country, said in an interview with The Guardian. “It’s taking root in states we traditionally think of as ‘friendly’ to abortion rights, without many people noticing.” The Guardian compiled a list of 50 abortion clinics that shut down permanently in 2014, and more than half were located in liberal states. Exact figures are difficult to pin down, and the phenomenon isn’t limited just to closures. At one abortion clinic in Philadelphia, a staunchly liberal city, obtaining an abortion is becoming significantly more difficult for women. Anyone who does get an abortion there must make it through a gauntlet aimed at changing their mind — like reading a state-mandated pamphlet that tries to do just that.
