Woman uses Trump rally as an excuse to dive in to Claudia Rakine book

By WITW Staff on November 11, 2015

An unnamed woman at a rally for Donald Trump made headlines this week after she was caught reading just a few rows behind the Republican presidential candidate. Her book of choice? Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry last year for its investigation of the pervasive nature of racism in America that marries “prose, poetry, and the visual image” — not necessarily the literature you’d expect a Trump fan to keep on hand, as he’s known for his racist remarks. Perhaps she was placed prominently behind The Donald by those managing the crowd, or maybe she is a supporter of his policies, but it’s safe to say that no matter the reason she’s there, this mystery woman did not care what was happening on the stage. Citizen is just that good!

Vic Berger posted footage of the woman — who brushed off a pair of Trump supporters who were trying to get her to put down the book and pay attention — to Vine, where it was picked up and shared on Twitter by Buzzfeed writer Saeed Jones.

Unnamed woman in the crowd of a Trump rally, the readers of the world have your back.
