The Danish Girl, which will hit theaters later this month, stars Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, an early recipient of sex reassignment surgery. During a screening hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in New York, the Oscar-winning actor explained that he prepared for this complex role by meeting with trans women, in order to better understand their journeys across the gender divide. “The way I approached this [role] was meeting with trans women of different generations…and hearing their experiences,” he said. “They were incredibly generous with educating me.” The Danish Girl will explore the landmark gender transition of Elbe, an artist who was assigned male at birth and underwent four reconstructive surgeries between 1930 and 1931.
