Donald Trump (who’s losing his frontrunner status) seems determined to prove his unique insight into the hearts and minds of women (and Muslims, for that matter). At a New Hampshire event on Monday, he addressed US intervention in the Middle East, suggesting that the United States has tried to force its version of “freedom” and Western democracy on cultures that aren’t always willing to accept this. He then went on to discuss the burqa, saying how he’d seen women interviewed argue, “We want to wear them, we’ve worn them for thousands of years. Why would anyone tell us not to?”
So far so good — but then Trump decided to delve into the reasons he thinks a woman would wear a burqa: “Fact is, it’s easier. You don’t have to put on makeup. Look how beautiful everyone looks. Wouldn’t it be easier? Right? Wouldn’t that be easy?” Trump continued. “I tell ya, if I was a woman, I don’t want to,” he continued, jokingly. “I’d be like, bwah [gesturing the burqa], ‘I’m ready, darling, let’s go.’ It’s true!”
