Target has received praise from parents and advocacy groups for the inclusion of a disabled child in its Halloween costume advertising. A young girl with leg braces and crutches appears in the catalog as Elsa from the smash hit Disney movie Frozen. The ad gained traction online on Sunday, after Facebook-user Jen Spickenagel Kroll published a post praising the ad: “My daughter (with arm crutches and prosthetic legs) is going to FLIP when she sees this!” she wrote, thanking the retailer: “Including children with special needs into advertising makes them less of a spectacle to the general public when they venture out into the real world. Normalizing disabilities in children is PRICELESS.” Other parents of children with disabilities and advocacy groups also took to social media, echoing Kroll’s sentiment, and Target responded to the outpouring of support by saying that its advertising team “tries hard to include all of our guests.”
