A 25-year-old woman is about to take over as the operator of the world’s most southerly post office. Laura Martin, from Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands, was selected from more than 2,400 applicants to staff the UK Heritage Trust post office from November. Remarkably, the outgoing operator, Amy Kincaid, used to room together with Martin at Scotland’s University of St Andrews, but was unaware Martin had applied to replace her. The Port Lockroy post office, in the British Antarctica Territory, handles mail for the scientists and other workers who call Antarctica home.
