Saudi wife could be jailed for posting secret video of philandering husband online

A woman in Saudi Arabia secretly recorded her husband groping the couple’s maid and then posted the footage on social media where it went viral. She could face potential prison time due to the country’s strict defamation laws, but her revenge video is winning her some fans online. The woman surreptitiously shot the video on her phone — it shows her husband putting his hands all over the maid and kissing her — and then uploaded it to a social media site along with a message saying, “The minimum punishment for this husband is to scandalise him.” The video went viral and many reportedly praised the woman for handling the matter the way she did. “I salute you warmly for your valiant courage,” one Internet commenter reportedly wrote. Another said, “You did the best thing because there was an urgent need for revenge and your revenge is the best.” That revenge, though, could come with some stiff consequences. Majib Qaroob, a prominent lawyer in Saudi Arabia, reportedly said the woman could be jailed for up to a year and slapped with a heavy fine because the kingdom’s defamation law is designed to be strict for these sorts of instances. “This law includes stiff punishment for anyone using mobile phones with a camera or other equipment to photograph others and defame them,” Qaroob said.
