Amber Rose’s Los Angeles “SlutWalk” meets with a mixed reaction

via Instagram/@amberrose

Los Angeles hosted the Amber Rose SlutWalk on Saturday, an event featuring dance performances, food and merchandise vendors, HIV testing and sexual awareness booths, and a multitude of scantily-clad women protesting slut-shaming and the belief that how one dresses justifies sexual violence. Amber Rose is an actress and model, and social media star whose tangles with rappers Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa have been highly publicized. The SlutWalk is an event originally created in response to comments by a Canadian police official who felt “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” SlutWalks now occur year-round across the world to protest sexual violence towards women and affirm a woman’s right to dress how she pleases: in short, as one sign at the Amber Rose Slutwalk read, “clothes are not consent.”

The event drew some detractors, including conservative writer Milo Yiannopolous, who staged a small counter-protest, holding a sign that read “‘Rape culture’ and Harry Potter. Both fantasy.” Others took to Twitter to signal their disapproval, such DearAunty, who posted: “Im thinking something has gone seriously wrong with the education of girls #feminism #amberroseslutwalk.”
