While touring the National Mall in Washington, D.C. this morning, a 5-year-old girl named Sofi Cruz caught the eye of Pope Francis after she managed to get past the barricades that separated his motorcade from the crowd of onlookers. A video released by Univision today shows Cruz walking with a police officer along the gates until the pope noticed the young girl and waved her over, telling his driver to come to a stop. After being lifted by security detail for an embrace, she presented Pope Francis with a t-shirt and a note, reportedly written in support of immigrants. It is still unclear how she managed to get through the barricade, but after being blessed by the pontiff, we have a feeling she won’t be grounded by her parents anytime soon.
